I support the notion of involving students in the creation of rubrics, especially for project that involve some subjective assessment.  For example, writing a formal academic report or creating a PowerPoint presentation, students would have input to the criteria and scale used.  I also see (and have used) this process after handing out project requirements in narrative form.  Involving the students in the rubric creation could involve the "picking apart" the text of project requirements and placing each "criteria" into the rubric, and then discussing/agreeing on the importance of each element.  For instance, is APA format on the same performance… >>>

Some rubrics are furnished with course materials and resources, and I find that they need tweaking to match my style and learners' individual needs.  I have been known to develop a rubric with student's assistance.  In one instance, it was particularly effective for students to be involved in the creation of a rubric because it prompted them to read a project description and pick out the specific requirements to be assessed on the rubric.

One possible technique that invites students to be part of the class (even though they are distant) is to have them interview each other in a Chat room and then post each other's biography.
