About me

I've been involved in college admissions for the past 11-12 years, working for private 2-year colleges. The area of admissions I concentrate on is high school recruitment. My job is do high school visits, classroom presentations and arrange guidance counselor events. I do no appointments, no interviews and no telemarketing.

Your use of 9-11 and the thousands of lives that were lost as a comparison is far-reaching and, in my opinion, insensitive. The unscrupulous schools you are referring to dig their own graves. Word gets around and it's tough to perpetuate when that word is negative.

By the same token, I don't believe everything I hear. I've had prospective students come into to my office and badmouth competitor schools. In many cases, it's nothing more than sour grapes because that student couldn't cut it at that school because of attendance issues or whatever.

I am also a veteran of college admissions, if you feel that 12 years in the business qualifies one as "veteran." I picked up a few tidbits from this training that will most likely prove helpful down the road.

My advice to newbies is to not take lightly the advice about getting to know co-workers in other departments i.e. faculty, FA, Career Services, etc. Tap their brains and get their perspectives - it can only help.
