About me

I am on my second career.  First one I retired as a Navy Lieutenant commander. I have been a nurse all my working life, and my last assignment was  as a Perioperative nurse at Naval medical Center San Diego, CA.  I specialized in quality and patient safety (CPHQ, CPPS, CNOR).  I had a great career in the Navy, traveling all over the world and living abroad.  I am currently into Yoga, health and wellness, and gardening.  I am very excited to shared my knowledge and experience with young minds especially when it comes to human factors limits, outcome bias and what we have learned from root cause analysis about medical errors.

I think that icebreakers are very helpful in creating a learning environment and developing teamwork among the students. It may also help students by relaxing their anxiety. I think I will make it part of my regular practice.

I had never heard of the 7 principles of learning as an education theory however, it seems to be concise of the elements to have a productive classroom.

I think this is especially a good topic of discussion for adult learners returning to school which may or may not have kept up with technology. There is so much social media which is even hard for me to keep up however, making it easier for student so as to not overwhelm them with material is important.  Having a short video on the needed technology and how it will be used may alleviate fears.

I love the idea of online video messages to be able to connect and give information with better visual cues then an email announcement.

I really like the flexibility of being able to give students structure choices when working in projects because I think its engages their creativity and it become more then just learning, it becomes a deeper experience which cultivates ling lasting memory.

I believe in school being a safe place because after all we are all here for one purpose and that is to learn. Even as an instructor, the Students are constantly teaching us from their perceptions and experience. I think giving my self permission to be learning really helps to set the example and authentically connect to students in learning.

I think some of my best training has been enjoyable and fun. I hope to bring some of the same techniques by making the lessons fun and exciting to our students .

I think students may not understand the differences between accreditation, and transfer of credit however, I think we can assist them with understanding what they need and who is best suited to help them. For the school to stay in compliance, as instructors this module really helps to delineate policy.

I learned that its best to seek the experts to ensure school stays in compliance, and admission should be focus on admitting students while financial aid office should receive all the questions related to financial aid. Once we start to be "helpful" we are bypassing the internal administrative protocols which protect the student and the college.

This module taught me to use government approve site for employment information. As economy changes, my story of employment during very prosperous times, may not apply when the economy is in a recession. So, when dealing with impressionable young minds is best to be very careful not to falsely reassured them.  The challenges are real.
