About me

I am on my second career.  First one I retired as a Navy Lieutenant commander. I have been a nurse all my working life, and my last assignment was  as a Perioperative nurse at Naval medical Center San Diego, CA.  I specialized in quality and patient safety (CPHQ, CPPS, CNOR).  I had a great career in the Navy, traveling all over the world and living abroad.  I am currently into Yoga, health and wellness, and gardening.  I am very excited to shared my knowledge and experience with young minds especially when it comes to human factors limits, outcome bias and what we have learned from root cause analysis about medical errors.

Comment on Estela Aragon's post:  thank you for sharing and being vulnerable.  I think technology can be a double-edge sworn and since we are in education and healthcare both require a lot of privacy and data protections. I think careful practice is wise

Team work is the basis for patient safety and high performance teams. The DOD and DEPT of Health address it by developing the program- TEAMSTEPPS ( Team Strategies to enhance performance and patient safety). IS has been adopted by the American Hospital Association and some medical schools to increase team performance during critical patient care such as cardiac arrest and transfers/ hand off.  It helps with standard communication ie. SBAR, to minimize miscommunication.  I also think that communication has an emotional component which has been label " psychological Safety" people must feel safe to speak truth to power.
