I like to use a little story I call "The Buffet". I will tell this story right after lunch on the first day of class. I like to start by asking the class if they had a good lunch. Then I start talking about how much I like going to a buffet for lunch because I get to eat as much as I like. I feel that "extra" credit is unfair to those who put forth the effort to do well in the class. It allows those who "slack off" in class the opportunity "catch up" with those students who did well in the first place. Besides, if someone does 100% AND does the extra credit, how can that person get more than 100%? 101%? A++? 4.01 GPA? Extra Credit = Bad Idea
Along with outlining the course objectives, the instructor should set the "tone" of the course on the first day. This lets the student know your expectations, both acedemically and behaviorally.
