Cultural competence is important because it can be used as a tool to expand how you engage with others. Race is a social construct that is not a beneficial tool when teaching 

I learned that diversity is an important part of everything we do. Being mindful of what we say and do particularly in a learning environment is important and effects the students we engage with. Social constructs and biases have no place in the teaching environment.
