Activity

Within this unit of multiple means of engagement it reemphasized the importance of relationships between student and teacher. All of these sections from self-regulation to persistence & effort all hinge on that relationship piece. If students do not feel like you are in their corner supporting them in their learning then none of the above skills can be attained. While revamping and implementing to a UDL curriculum feels very overwhelming, it is important to realize that Rome was not built in a day and try converting a unit at a time to incorporate all the important facets in UDL.

Within this module of understaning multiple means of action and expression, I learned quite a lot in terms of how students access materials and the importance of allowing for flexiblity in how students show their understanding and mastery of the conent. I espeally find the executive functioning section very important to allow students the "buy in" to their learning through personalized goals and giving authentic and timily feedback to students in imparitive.

The first principle of UDL: purpose of Multiple means of Represtation refers to presenting information in different fomats to provide opportunities for students to actually understand the content. This could include but is not limited to multiple media formats. This requires the instructor to look at content from all different veiws (if student has loss of hearing, then having visuals with captions or transcripts is very important or if students first language is not english to make sure content is translated or can be translated for ease of learning).

Discussion Question: what have you learned about UDL and how you intend to apply it.

After completing this first module, I have learned that the UDL approach to curriculum and pedagogy meets each learner at their personal level. It allows each learner the flexiblity to learn, engage, and show their mastery in content. The backbone of UDL is looking at the whole child, their struggles, their strenths, and their learning goals and thus giving them individualed support and guidence through their learning journey. While in theory UDL has a lot of potential and prospect of success, I struggle to wrap by brain… >>>
