Frederick, A true open door policy is very powerful. At the beginning of each semester/module students should be reminded that there is an open door policy and they should be invited to walk through. Cindy Bryant

Justine, Many times students fail to bring their concerns/complaints to a faculty member for fear of retribution. They have to believe in the system. One way to do this is to listen carefully and intervene when you overhear a potential problem. After a few students have worked through the system and know that it works then they can champion the cause. Cindy Bryant

Sandra, Te general consensus is that the regulations are in place to protect the vulnerable. Vulnerability results from developmental problems, personal incapacities, disadvantaged social status, inadequacy of interpersonal networks and supports, degraded neighborhoods and environments, and the complex interactions of these factors over the life course. The priority given to varying vulnerabilities, or their neglect, reflects social values. Kortney, I always like to emphasis the part about getting back to the student. As educators we get so busy with our day to day duties and trying to meet every students needs that we overlook the student who stands patiently awaiting our response. I recommend that a person marks their calendar with a date to get back with the student. Cindy Bryant

Kelvin, You are right, not all complaints are valid. However, sometimes it is more important that the students concerns be recognized than resolved. Listening is a powerful tool that engages the students self worth and recognition. Cindy Bryant

NeKiesha, The biggest issue with the media is exactly what you mention-popularizing topics. The general public is not interested in topics that run the status quo but we are interested in what challenges our senses or tends to shock us. We are our own worst enemies. Cindy Bryant
