Collaboration is always effective
You have to make sure that it is appropriate, fair, and consistent. Students should be able to understand the feedback provided. That is why I favor track changes and the comment feature in Word.
Despite many collaboration tools, I think that the track changes feature is the most beneficial. The goal is to help the student become his or her best. I believe that if I can give an example and ask them to check the document, this helps them.

Career Ed Lounge is embedded in over eighty professional development portals serving the career and technical education community. Performance Groups in the Lounge are integrated with related learning opportunities offered on these portals. With a few exceptions, Performance Groups are also publicly available to any member of the Lounge to maximize peer-to-peer learning and performance outcomes.
