Activity

this can be a difficult situation especially when there are students who work graveyard shifts and then come straight to class.  they are living on a few hours of sleep a day between work, school, family, and studying.  I try to work with individuals to keep them busy.  One thing that works wonders is lecturing for 20 min, hands-on 20 min, computers 20 min.... repeat.  Today's students are mainly composed of the new computer generation that keeps them very mentally active.  Things change continuously.  They need that same action in the classroom.  Having students sit in front of a computer… >>>

One thing that I have noticed in many higer education schools is this:

Too much of an authoritarian environment leaves the students distrustful.

There is no "team" -- especially with instructor and class

There is less cohesion and less gets accomplished

Students complain about being "treated like children" -- then do what they want in spite.

Rules must be explained not just stated (e.g. no food, drinks, etc in the classroom -- computers get damaged/ insects are attracted and also get into the electronics/ LABS are still under CLIA compliance)

Cell phone usage is not allowed because we are "training… >>>

Irma,

I see this with a few teachers here. It is a shame that some teachers would rather be "bff" instead of a leader of education.  The students who are influenced by this will come out at the short end of the stick in the end.  I have seen it happen over an over.  On the other hand, there are many teachers here who do a fan-tabulous job! The students begin to see how much they have learned and how successful they are.  Word gets around fast.

Keep your eye on success.  Keep doing your job.  Doing your job correctly… >>>

Michael,

I have a link that we used a lot in a school district I used to work at in TX.  I utilize this same information for my higher education classes, as well. The students do quite well.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Good luck.

My grandmother taught me this valuable lesson. She never got to go to school past high school but she never stopped learning, reading, and improving. It took me 17 years to complete my BA in Psychology.  In the middle of that I was also taking the Medical Assistant courses. One very stressful day I was thinking that I wasn't cut out for the MA program and thought I might have to quit (2 boys and one on the way). She shook her finger at me and stated "You will not quit.  You never know when you're going to need that… >>>

There are two types of stresses, eustress (good) and dysstress (bad).  Both can release hormones in the body that can overload the system and cause issues such as organ constriction, shut-down, or malfunction.  This, in combination with pharmaceuticals, can be a recipie for hardship.  Exercise is always a good idea but remember to find at least 10 minutes a day (can even be spread into incriments) to have just to yourself. Turn off the cell phone, computer, and go to an area where you can have your own space/quiet and center. It's called "you time".  As a widow, this concept… >>>

One of the things that has worked from early childhood to higher education is my discussion on Respect & Choice. The first day I let them know that RESPECT for self, others, rules, and things around them is imperative. This includes communication.  No one is entitled to respect. It is earned.  Second, CHOICE is the ONLY thing in life you truly ever own. No one chooses to be born or to die but the choices we make from beginning to end are solely our responsibility and we are responsible for all our choices; good or bad - right or wrong.… >>>
