Allen, Yes - Yes - Yes! In addition to this...focus on the "required" number of credits per program. Nothing makes less sense than a 54 credit certificate program and a 108 quarter credit associate's degree. Maybe when the money didn't matter in our business 10 years ago, you could give Program Directors the freedom to create as many courses and credits as they wanted, today that is not rhe case. Many times, an academic operator who has experience in both operations and academic affairs can effectively guide both sides of this equation toward a happy place. 1+1's and "required" credit… >>>

Jennie, A timeline also assigns a very specific responsible person for the action required. That can sometimes be a big problem with program development. A key leader to oversee the project and key assignments that this person can point toward when the ball is dropped. Often times, it is a peer that is assigned to direct others to do their part. In a matrix organization that lacks egos, this works. In a strict hierarchy with egos, this is more difficult. Christopher Nickell

Lauren, They have to be involved from the beginning, the very beginning. A goal must be stated...usually to create more growth and to fill a need for specific training in a local market area. School groups that involve front line faculty early and often find the most success in new programs or program modifications. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is keeping front line associates or faculty in the dark about the business need. You sometimes think...there job is to teach the curriculum. Candis, Training centers can be a good thing and a bad thing...when you have that type of competition in your area, you have to create an advantage for your students. What ways can your college offer an advntage over a training center that is often cheaper and quicker? Christopher Nickell
Candis, The "requirement" is the beginning but advancing your advisory board to include only those who are vocal, offer input and take their role seriously as a member of your board it the next step. When you have to remind them the meeting is over and everyone else has left the meeting...that is a great advisory board! Christopher Nickell
