I use the SMART goal method, but I will add the "ER" to the method to help the student reassess the goals when necessary. Also, The "If" "Then" component will help my students know what to do next and understand that things don't always go the way they expect them too, but we can have a plan of action and some resources to turn to when those challenges arise. SMARTER!

I've learned the names and titles for behaviors I've noticed with the students that I Coach. Most of the over achievers have the Forest for the Trees Phenomenon, where that have too much attention on their high expectations of themselves. These students are Extrinsic motivated with an Introjected push, by the fact that they want to appear accomplished not only to themselves but to others.

There are different types of goals. The more challenging the goal may lead to a feeling of overwhelmed, which may lead to stress or paralysis of achieving the goal.  Setting approaching goals rather than avoidance goals are the ones that will lead to a better learning experience. Goal setting is necessary and should be done specifically with a system in place to achieve the end-state goal/result.
