This area really hit home for me. I've been the person to succomb to stereotypes and have looked at a disabled person in pity and I've also have limited their options because of my inexperience. So for me, personally, I need to remember you never know what a person is capable or incapable of so DON'T assume.

I think the best approach to use is Universal Design. You never know what a person is capable or incapable of. Having this approach will appeal to the majority.

One subject matter that I felt was VERY important, is the fact that the student MUST make the institution aware of their disability to receive the proper accommodations. "It takes two to make things go right."
I'm glad regulations have been introduced to prohibit aspects of incentive compensation. It really controls the entire Admissions viewpoint. We aren't sales representatives. These regulations help admissions reps to look at a prospective student as a person instead of another enrollment number. As an Admissions Representative, I truly enjoy helping someone navigate through this crazy thing we call life. I enjoy knowing that I gave them a stepping stone to the rest of their life. My salary is enough; I do this because I love it!

I do not personally work in financial aid, however being a graduate who used student loads, entrance and exit counseling is essential. I found it helpful in the beginning, to know the interest rates and learning the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized. Following exit counseling, it was vital to know the payback process. Loan counseling is an extremely tool for borrowing students.

As an Admissions Representative, you will wear many hats but the most important is Life Coach. As you build a relationship with a prospective student, you are learning about their past, their passions, and their desires. It is vital to take time to LISTEN to each student and this will allow you to successfully guide them. This guidance is literally the stepping stone to their future.
