I have found that having some stress in the classroom helps to keep the students focused on the topic and on track.  I limit the amount of stress and the amount of time they are under it.  The knowledge that there will be a quiz at the end of a lecture will usually help to keep their minds on the topic at hand.  I remember back to when I was in College and how that knowledge always seemed to make the lecture that day more interesting and informative, and hopefully the same will apply to my students.

After taking the class on retention I can see a value in the material that was being taught.  Many of the things in the class are already part of the method I am using.  I see things that I can add,  and things that I can change, and things that I should look at changing .  I also found some things that I feel we need to tighten control on.  I am old school and see some of the suggestions as not challenging the students quite enough.

One of the biggest problems that I see in retention is poor setting of expectations by the admissions personnel.  I am not trying to place all of the problems of the world or the system on them .. but I have heard from too many students over the years statements such as:

But my admissions rep said that it would be OK for me to be 30 minutes late for class each night.

I was told that you would work with me on my needing to be absent.

I need to get out of class early to because my husband… >>>
