About me

I have been teaching for 3 years now at a college in the Sacramento area.  My classes require students to use both mental and hands on (tactile) techniques in court reporting.  The courses that I have taken online have helped me immensely.  I have sharpened my skills as far as plans, schedules, monitoring, lecturing, conversing w/ adult students and it's paying off.   The courses are very organized, and I definitely feel more confident.

I was a private secretary, legal secretary, court reporter, carpenter, owned and remodeled  a motel for years.  I can run construction jobs -- schedules, etc.  I love working with wood, and some day I hope to teach wood shop.  Probably not this lifetime. 

I am enjoying teaching as it is very rewarding. 

Activity

I feel that any determined student can be successful if they apply themselves.  However if the instructor is not 100% into making the course exciting and does not interact with students to find out where they stand during the learning process of a particular subject, the student becomes insecure, bored or feels that they have not gained any knowledge or enough knowledge to press on in a particular field, thus losing interest and all the determination in the world of the student's part is not sufficient.

I found that Course ED 117 was perfect for what I need in my class; because I have such a diversity in ages and backgrounds, and I can now see how I really have to incorporate different learning tools to accomodate my students.  I have the older generation (Vets/baby boomers) and the Y-ers all mixed together.  It's difficult reading, lecturing, power-pointing, and hands-on all in one day -- let alone one hour.  l find the Y-ers are the students that keep me on my toes, and they definitely want to know "WHY?." to every single statement I make or when… >>>

I feel that the way the course was presented -- short and to the point -- helps with retention.  I agree with you totally on the rentention part.
