I have learned that retention starts during the admissions process. I have also learned that if a student has more exposure to the school, staff, hands-on experience, and school catalog, they will have a better understanding of the school expectations. They will also have a self-assessment whether the school is the right choice for them to pursue. 

I learned that one must be careful on what type of questions are being asked to a student with a disability. Like the reading said, "treat a person with a disability as a student FIRST. It is inappropriate to ask personal questions about their disability. 

 I learned that accommodations is a law that should be followed at all times with students. I also learned that students are not forced to use their accommodations if they don't want, but it must be documented that they didn't use them. 

After reading the material, it is refreshing to learn about blindness and deafness. I was aware that being blind doesn't always mean "seeing nothing." There is a vast range of blindness, and it is important to understand how much the student can see or not see. This will help create a better understanding on the needs of the student. Deafness is the same thing. There are individuals who simply need a hearing aid and there are other people who simply can't hear a sound. I have learned that an accommodation is used to help a student in the learning process. It is important to include students who require accommodations in their learning environment. All students have an equal opportunity to succeed, but they are also responsible for their own success.
