It is important to base the formative assessment around the content timeframe and focus less on regular formative assessment. I feel most commonly, I use summative assessment style. It may be a good idea to readdress assessment styles. 

Online testing can be great for both parties. The online quizzes and exams allow for quick grading, the ability to test remotely, and easy review. 

Keep in mind the students are also consumers. When developing an online learning environment, I will be sure to have quality modules. multiple evaluation techniques, multiple ways to communicate, etc. 

Ensure that meaningful feedback is being provided during assessment of student work. Components of meaningful feedback include: connecting it to course objectives, having a positive tone, and providing individualized feedback.

Developing different areas within the course for different types of communication is important. There should be a place where students can communicate amongst themselves, students can communicate with the instructor as a group, and also an easily accesable way for students to communicate with the instructor 1:1. 

Consistency in presentation of the course will help students feel comfortable navigating. It can also make the grading and analyzing easier for the instructor as well. 

Understanding that there are different types of learners that are in the online learning setting. Finding a way to engage all learning types will be important to the success of not only the student but the instructor. Online settings can be alienating so ensuring that students have resources including technical resources will be important to retention. 

Active participation from the instructor is important to functional discussions. Whether it be synchronous or asynchronous, the instructor should be active, discuss important topics, be sure to guide the discussion to stay on track, and be sure to comment regularly. Setting standards and discussing netiquitte is important as well. 

Being present within the classroom allows the instructor to build relationships with the students. This builds a more trusting relationship between faculty and student body. Biographies are a great way to break the ice in the online classroom. It is important for students to know about the instructor both academically and professionally. This helps to build rapport. 

Providing sufficient structure when coordinating e-learning is vital to the students success. Ensuring that there is plenty of support both for learning and technology components. Frequent announcements and communication throughout the entirety of the class shows students you are available, present, and active. It also creates a forum for students to ask question and get clarification. Having clear requirements and expecations will also aid the student in successful completion of the course.
