I have learned the importance of understanding in complete detail the policies and procedures with request to the release of student data.  This includes a full understanding of all aspects of record release, e.g. release of records to parents, exceptions, managing requests for directory information and those that do not include directory information and school ID badges for students.  The way that I would apply this information is to move purposely and carefully when presented a request and to check the policy to ensure that any information I am releasing is within the policies of FERPA.

My main takaway and how I will apply this information, as an online instructor, is to treat all student information in a confidential manner and will not provide any information regarding my students and any information related to their classes to anyone other than the school officials with whom I work at the institution where I teach.

I would rather err on the side of not giving out any information vs. taking a risk of violating FERPA.  That said, if I find myself in a situation where someone other than an official at the school where I teach requests information… >>>

While I have been familiar with discrimination based on sex, sexual harassment and hostile work environment, over the course of my career, this training session taught me so much more than I thought I already knew.  It is critically important to remain on top of issues with respect to discrimination based on sex and sexual harassment issues, and my take away from this training is that we need to stay vigilant and aware of these situations that can and do occur and to be familiar with Title IX, the Clery Act and VAWA and the protocols and processes with respect… >>>
