It is important to recognize the contributions of board members, but this is often overlooked.

Boards can only be successful if its members are carefully selected. This process is similar to the process the institution uses in hiring faculty and staff. Board members should be interviewed, able to articulate their desire to serve on the board and pledge their commitment to dedicate the time required to be an effective board member.

A school may benefit from forming special-purpose advisory boards to assist with solving unique problems that the school's staff may not be qualified or experienced enough to resolve.

Regulatory agency rules should be researched and understood early in your planning, and SME's from your institution, especially your FAO, should be consulted.

Making changes to an existing program can be a low cost alternative to creating a new program, if your market research supports this.

Even the best designed program may be useless if you have not conducted a detailed community needs assessment to determine the need for the program, whether there are placement opportunities and students who would be willing to complete the program.

Loan repayment requires the same dedication the student displayed throughout their enrollment. The information they receive from the FAO is as important as the information they receive in all their other courses.

Effective borrower education is more than just entrance and exit counseling. We should use every contact with students as an opportunity to review their rights and responsibilities.

Obtaining frequent contact information updates is very important, especially given the transient nature of our students, and the tendency to frequently change cell phone numbers and email addresses. This is a constant struggle at our institution.
