All of the courses that I teach, we use a calander form of lesson plan. This is rough guide and each instructor is responsable for creating a more detailed day lesson plan.
Every class is different, but I generally gage the success on the first day of a class by how much participation I am getting as the day goes on. Participation is an indicator of how comfortable the students are in their environment. As long as some sense of order is maintained, I like to have an open format where they can ask any questions even remotely pertinent to the subject, this keeps them engaged and learning right from the start.
The mood for the class is set on the first day. I have found that if the students know what to expect, as the should, through a good presentation of the objectives of the course. The students participate more and over all accept what they are learning better if they know why they are learning it and what the methodology is going to be.
