Problem based learning is particularly effective at getting students to think through a difficult concept.

Rubrics are critical to connecting learning outcomes to overall success in online courses.

Online teaching is stigmatized, by both students and other instructors. Even if students do remain engaged, they often want information and answers relayed to them in a traditional lecture syle approach. Instructors from a traditional lecture style background may be resistant to embrace active online learning techniques. It is important, when usuing active learning in online courses, to explain the importance of arriving at answers and working through problems yourself, not simply relying on the instructor to tell you whether you are corrrect or not.

 

Active learning should be an integral part of an online course. Assignments should be assigned periodically and give both the student and the instructor time to reflect on the material. Most importantly, the instructor is a guide with active learning, not just a lecturer. I intend to incorporate assignments which give students time to apply what they learn in class to real-life scenarios.
