Activity

While time consuming, I like the idea of reading all essay questions first before grading the students

Asking students to post questions anonymously on Mentimeter or another type of polling app avoids the question "are there any questions".  I sprinkle this in very infrequently as I want to encourage dialogue in class rather than through their phones.

I feel this section of the course is a bit outdated as it fails to cover the huge impact that social media, and online discussion sites such as Discourse and Whats App, now has on our student body.  However, guiding students to use internet resources appropriately to enhance their learning is important.

Opening and closing activities are really important!  An opener that engages the students will excite them about the class and a closer that helps them reflect on what they've learned and how it applies to their career will bolster their confidence in their ability to learn and apply new concepts.

I totally agree with you Justin!  The tools we offer our students can help them complete their schooling and be successful in life.

My action plan after taking this course is to make of list of questions for my classes that involve discussion.  I hope to model reasoning skills by doing this and will encourage my students to also come to class with questions based on their pre-readings.

I use this to check knowledge and gauge interest in different topics.

How do you use music in the classroom?  I instruct in a diploma-granting program and I'm always looking for new ideas.  I have played a music video that was on topic for the subject matter I was teaching.  It was for fun and my intent was to spice up my lecture a bit.  I'd love to hear any suggestions on how music is used to help deliver information for both kinesthetic and auditory learners (as per the sensory modalities chapter).

In the sensory modalities module, I learned that kinesthetic learners learn more effectively standing up, listening to music, while doodling, etc.  This was a delight for me to learn as it offers some fun diversions from the usual lecture or demo format.
