Establish and publish the class management plan... be consistient and fair.  Minimal exceptions... unless concession is made to all.

The best way to to keep students engaged is to understand the modes of communication for online instruction... understanding synchronous and asynchronous communication was a plus for me.

"If you can't reach them... you cant teach them"

Building relationships is possible, even in the online community.  Be response and make sure communications are fluid... students will apprecitae that.

The key thing is to have "curb appeal".  E-Learning has to not only be effective in the content delivery, it needs to be visually engaging.  To teach online is different than designing online courses, although many teachers are taksed with both.

As a teacher and developer, always think with the end in mind and then build it... they will come !
