There have been quite a few students nearing the end of their learning at our school that have some how grown a great negativity towards the school. They tend to show this to new students and it grows like wildfire. Everyone needs to work as a team to target these problems early on and to help aid these students with there issues. If this happens, we can enforce a more positive environment for the students and increase retention

the big picture

Before going into the topic for the day I like to start of with something interesting that happened in my career that pertains to the topic. This gets the students interested and keeps them wondering how the situation was resolved. When I complete the story I like to move back to the topic on the white board and elaborate on how understanding this material that we are discussing today is relivant and extremely important to understand.

students and stress

I believe one of the big issues that we deal with in our courses is the generation of students, I believ we are on generation Z now. A lot of younger people have not had the opportunities to be held accountable or possibly never had responsibilities. This plays heavily into attrition, not used to dealing with problems or stress, some students are willing to take the easy road and leave. This is were the importance of keeping an open ear or knowing who to direct the student to if the problem gets persists

unfocused students

Usually when you have a student or students that aren't focused there is a reason for it. Either there are personal problems ar perhaps they just have no interest in the topic you are presenting. As a facilitator, you need to identify these students early on before it effects there grade or perhaps the rest of the class. If you can relate the topic to something that may interest them or tailor parts of the topic to various situations that may interest said students they will become more enguaged. A power point presentation can be a form of torture if not used properly. When looking at a new slide and opening it up with a question and why it may be important will bring interest to the topic. By handing out physical components and explaining how they will incorporating this new information out in lab helps dramatically
