My experience as a professor has not so much been inappropriate communication between students; however, I've had a few incidents of inappropriate student to instructor communication. For the most part, the students were upset regarding the grades that the students earned (emphasis on "earned") for any given assignment. One student was referred to student services due to a record of belligerent communication with various professors. However, another student, over the course of the semester, became increasingly aggressive to the point of belligerent communication once this student noticed that I grade work rather than effort. I actually ignored the student's communication… >>>

There are a few points that I consider regarding assessment. The rubrics are a wonderful function in LMS. This provides for consistency in the grading process, and gives a level of equity for each student to make the learning and assessment methods cohesive. However, we must ensure that the rubric point allocations are appropriate. I would recommend that the point spread is even rather than having a large gap in the allocation in order to provide the best assessment. Finally, the course content or subject matter has a great deal to do with which assessment is appropriate. Virtual simulations, for… >>>

During my tenure in online teaching, I have found that there are various reasons why a combination of communication tools should be used in a class. E-mail is "king", particularly in a asynchronous setting. However, other tools are needful in general, but not effective for the student. For example, I may have a single mother of 3 who works full-time while taking 2 classes online. The use of teleconference may not work well due to the massive amount of responsibility she must shoulder alone while advancing her career. However, she may be an avid e-mailer based on her schedule. I've… >>>

I find that many online students (my own students or personal friends in online classes) choose the online learning environment because of the flexibility offered to appease their life situation and/or learning style. However, I have found that a few students seem to find that online learning is the "path of least resistance" in gaining their education. For example, my students normally start the term with very vague or insufficient responses in the discussion form (i.e. "I agree" or "Great Post"). Each week I emphasize that proper discussion constitutes an answer of agreement or disagreement in conjunction with some type… >>>

Technology in the online classroom is massively important in this age. Every instructor must consider the subject matter of the class, how best to instruct the students based on the subject matter using the appropriate technology, and MAXIMIZE the process based on the technology. Excellent tools are available, but at times, instructors can fail to make the most of what is available. The answer is not always finding another tool so much as it is to maximize what you already have at your disposal.
