Activity

Have different types of learning covered for your lecture and practice the lecture before starting your class.

Assigned seating may be best. An icebreaker for the first time would be nice to get rid of the awkwardness and maybe to learn something about the students. Finding something to connect with the students will help them feel comfortable and also introducing yourself and your experience while not bragging or gloating will be good for them to trust in your knowledge.

Planning and being on time will give you a sense of preparedness. A syllabus is important for the students as a roadmap but also is important to keep the professor accountable.

Look the part of a professional and exude confidence while not being a know it all

Maintaining records keeping so you can reference each student is a great idea as it may be hard to keep track of students online. Counseling students and having records of the conversation will also be beneficial if there are issues that arise. Students who are online may feel like they are not being watched but should realize that everything they are writing is being read. It is important to keep a cordial class environment.

Asynchronous discussion is important as it provides students who have other responsibilities to engage in education at their own pace while still providing structure to the learning. Synchronous and asynchronous both have their place in online courses.

You must be as present as you can although you are teaching a distance learning course. Short biographies of both the professor and the students will help build rapport within the classroom.

In order to teach you must first be the student. Know your course materials, modules, and how to navigate them.
