About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi Jeffrey, It sounds as though you do a thorough job with your students about taking responsibility for their own action. Anytime a student is not taking responsibility for their action, I point it out to them immediately so that they can understand at the very moment.

Creating a positive instructor image

Hi William, It is imperative for instructors to appear very confident. In order to be confident, one must be organized, prepared, and knowledgeable. Students pick up quickly on instructors that are not confident. Students will begin to complain about the instructor tremendously after learning the instructor is not confident. Patricia

Hi Bill, Graduates make marvelous guest speakers. Students enjoy hearing those testamonies from graduate guest speakers. Graduate guest speakers are a plus to have come back to your institution and talk to students. Patricia

Hi Cheryl, Sometimes we make things to tempting for our students, such as seating them too close. I agree whenever they are spread out the temptation is a lot less. I make it known to my students in a subtle way they are being watched, by standing and actually watching them. Patricia

Making course requirements clear for students

Hi Ana, It is a typical, yet effective practice to go over the syllabus on the first day. Students need to know on Day 1 exactly what is expected of them. I've known instructors to even quiz students on the syllabus to make sure they understand. Patricia
