About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Anajali, We all get in trouble whenever things are assumed. The best practice is to explain everything fully. Patricia
Hi Sarah, What a great way to get students motivated, and it is directly applicable to the lesson. Students get it whenever tangibility is related to content. Patricia
Hi Yvonne, This is certainly a great way to generate good discussion. Students can really think out of the box and may have something on the list that you have never thought of. Patricia
Hi Rochelle, You have to be strong and maintain a sense of professionalism, yet be caring to not get drawn into students life's problems. Listen compassionately, offer advice, seek expert help if there is a need, and remember you are the instructor. Patricia
Hi Skip, Wow! Amazing, I teach computer courses, and my students know on Day 1 they are not to go to the social websites during instructional time, otherwise they will be removed from class and counted absent. As a second offense, I will remove them from my class permanently (I never had to do this). My students know that I do not tolerate utlizing the computer for other than what I am teaching. You are real understanding in this situaton, if you do not mind it, continue to be flexible. Patricia
Hi Jaun, I certainly find it impressive based on the amount of variation you utilize to try to grab your students attention. Continue to try to reach all students! Patricia
Hi Brandon, It is important for students to have very clear expectations and requirements of them. Visualization always seems to put things in perspective. Patricia
Hi Brian, I am an academic dean, and I have found that students are quick to blame instructors. You followed proper procedure. Your observation was that the instructor handled herself very professionally, but it was the student who was rude and disrepsectful. It sounds like personnel handled the student, and the students knows exactly what behavior she is to display. I hope that the meeting with the student was documented. It is always good to keep an audit trail on disruptive student. Patricia
Hi Bill, The instrutor has to be in full control to not allow befriending of a student because it can also be a fast process. Draw a line and DO NOT let students cross it. Patricia
Hi Andrea, You begin to nuture these students on Day 1 about turning their thought pattern around about the course. This takes work on the instuctor's side. Thank you for working hard for your students. Patricia
