About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi Glenn, I know our students do have a lot going on. You gave them great advice. At my institution, all brand new students must take a seminar that teaches them about study skills, time management, overcoming obstacles, etc. The seminar has proven to be very effective. Patricia

Hi Carrie, If you are intimidated by this student, you need to get your DOE and director involved so that this student is spoken to in a very matter-of-fact way. He needs to realize his short coming is nobody's fault but his. You can only teach those who are there. Don't beat yourself up, other students were extremely successful. Teach those who want to be taught. I can't believe your institution doesn't have an attendance policy. You may want to speak with the appropriate staff so that one is implemented to avoid problems such as with this student, i.e., late… >>>

Hi Maria, I solely agree! Our students come with a ton of problems. Most problems are beyond our scope, we need to direct them to the experts. Patricia
Hi Heather, You are right! I follow these same practices. Students need to know up front what the rules, policies, and procedures are. The instructor needs to make sure to enforce the various rules, policies, and procedures, otherwise students will take you for a joke. Patricia
