About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Reducing student cheating

Hi Robert, When you have evidence that a student has cheated, the student does not have a leg to stand on, but some will try to debate, and yes I have seen some students turn into monsters when they have been caught cheating. At my institution, it is bottom line, here is the evidence, and you have violated the honor code. You will be reprimanded by getting at least an "F" in the course. Patricia

Avoiding common instructor mistakes

Hi Robert, I totally agree! I teach a Ten-key course, of course, which is math related. I have an exercise where mistakes have been made on an adding tape, and students must compare the adding tape to the actual problem to determine what mistake(s) was made on the adding tape. The studenst are to correct the mistakes without reworking the entire problem. There are many people who cannot find their own mistakes. They know something is wrong, but they do not know what is wrong or how to fix it. Using logics is a good way to catch math-related mistakes.… >>>

Getting buy in from students

Hi Pamela, I have experienced with Keyboarding that a lot of students come in knowing the "why" of the course, but as you do I still express why the course is so beneficial both personally/professionally. Almost everyone understands the importance of typing in today's time. It certainly is the foundation for technology. Patricia

Using guest speakers as resources

Hi Kathy, Great use of a student guest speaker in field. I use this practice a lot because students that are on their externship can shed a lot of light as to what's going on in the field. I also get the placement coordinator involved whenever students become so narrow-minded about not exploring their employment opportunities. Patricia

Making Students Active Learners
