It's important to meet the students eye to eye. Having discussions that bring out what motivates a student helps formulate strategy in helping that student.

Creating more project based learning where the path is chosen by the student seems to be a great opportunity to offer classroom autonomy.

The emphasis on the first few minutes of class is important. It sets the stage, and the expectations. But it also provides security for a student by establishing a baseline of trust. Letting a student know what is about to be taught in a professional matter lets the students know what to expect.

Adult learners bring a level of experience that younger learners typically won't have. Part of understanding this is realizing that learners are motivated in different ways. It's important to meet the student where they are at. Also, understanding that adult learners value purposeful and practical instruction.
