The importance of making yourself present is that it creates a relationship you can see. You can relate to a real person, not a machine or a voice. And it's also important that the students (and vice versa) know who is teaching them, what is their background and what kind of education they have. I believe it creates a comfort zone where it makes it easier to speak and participate
