About me

A little bit about me, I am Laura Heath, a resident of Chambers County, a wife and mom of four including multiple fur babies. I received my BS degree In Agricultural Business & Economics from Auburn University. I have spent the last 9 years bookkeeping for the Chambers County School District and this will be my third year teaching our Business Finance program and leading our FBLA club. I look forward to preparing our students for future employment in the field of Business.

Activity

I love teaching and being involved with CTE. CTE has a lot more to offer by giving students real-world projects that they will see in the daily workforce. By using interactive activities and having the students move around freely and be more engaged through problem-solving and collaboration, they don't realize that I am assessing their behaviors and giving them feedback through constructive criticism.

Different assessment methods are used to measure students' knowledge and skills. Using rubrics to assist in grading can also help see if the students have memorized the information but know how to apply it.

This module showed the importance of asking questions and how to turn them into other students' responses. It encourages class participation and critical thinking. Open-ended questions seem to be the best route for students to think outside the box.

Showing students how to integrate AI into the classroom has become beneficial to me. In addition, I would like to try a flipped classroom, but many students wouldn't come to class prepared.

The idea of students interacting with each other is important as it keeps them engaged in the lesson that is being taught. But the introductory phase of the lesson is as important as the ending phase. When those are combined with student interaction, the students come back for more.

The overall course served as a reminder that all students learn differently, and that by using hands-on approaches, visual aids, clear instructions, and creating a supportive environment, we as CTE instructors provide all students with an equal opportunity to succeed.

Breaking the barrier with clearer instructions, diagrams, apps, and more hands-on activities is resourceful. Giving students instructions on what's to be expected so they can get a head start can lead to success, along with using guided notes.

We can accommodate students who are ready to go into the workforce and be successful.  As a CTE instructor, I use different teaching strategies to mimic a real business, and the hands-on approach seems to be quite successful when building the students' confidence before entering the workforce.

Additional support and accommodations are needed for students with learning disabilities. Being a teacher requires us to be patient while giving precise instructions and allowing more time to complete assignments if needed. These factors that I use in the classroom now have helped some students learn and be more successful.

As a new teacher who has many students who are all diverse with strengths and weaknesses, this helped me understand how to assist using different strategies and support. I will give clearer and shorter instructions to accommodate different learning rates.
