One of the key insights I gained is that communication skills can be especially challenging in the online learning environment. Without face-to-face interactions, students may struggle to interpret tone, express their ideas clearly, or engage in meaningful discussions with their peers and instructors. Written communication becomes the primary method of interaction, making it essential for students to communicate respectfully, professionally, and effectively.

One concept I had not previously considered was the distinction between social networking and social media in the online learning environment. Through this training, I gained a better understanding of how social networking can be intentionally used to build connections, encourage collaboration, and foster a sense of community among students.

Through this training, I gained a greater understanding of the importance of helping students develop traditional pen-and-paper skills in addition to what is done in the on-line setting. In today's technology-driven learning environment, fostering these foundational skills can be challenging as students often rely heavily on electronic devices for communication and learning. I also learned about the value of developing a Community of Practice, where students can engage with peers, share experiences, and learn collaboratively.

I have gained a deeper understanding of how to effectively support students with learning disabilities and other learning challenges in the online environment by incorporating inclusive teaching practices, clear communication, and flexible learning strategies that promote student success.

Practicing demonstrations before class is an important part of effective instruction. When instructors rehearse skills, procedures, or activities in advance, they become more confident in the delivery of the material and are better prepared to anticipate student questions or challenges.

When instructors take time to introduce themselves and share a brief professional and personal background, it helps students feel more comfortable and connected.

Students bring different backgrounds, experiences, strengths, and preferences to the learning environment, which can influence how they engage with and process information.

I enjoyed learning about the synchronous/asynchronous methods in this module. Thoughtful use of these helps build rapport, encourages open communication, and promotes student success.

This module reinforced to me that teaching online students requires intentional effort to create a learning environment that closely mirrors the engagement, connection, and support found in a traditional classroom. Our challenge as instructors will be to build the relationships that encourage active participation.

This module reinforced that understanding a variety of instructional methods helps instructors effectively engage students, accommodate different learning styles, and create a positive learning environment. This helps with course and content delivery which can foster student participation and success.
