About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Jerome, I really like your approach. I to am very strict on language. I am a professional and the students are training to be professionals, thus "we" are going to act like professionals. We will dress and speak like professionals while we develop the knowledge and skills required of the profession. End of story. Your use of the flip chart is a great way of illustrating what is expected of the students and what happens when they don't adhere to the standards of their profession. Gary

Hi Erica, Students love stories and when they know you were a former student yourself they can really relate to what you are saying. I firmly believe that many students think instructors just exist as vapors and appear during teaching time and then disappear once their instructional time is over. So by see you as being human they understand that you understand where they are coming from. Gary

Becoming aware of retention strategies...

Hi Meggan, I agree with you. You have to get them "hooked" right from the beginning. By having activities and icebreakers you will get the students engaged in the learning process and they can see how they can have success in the course. Gary
