I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Rachel, What are some strategies that you use to get your students to come to class prepared to discuss the day's assigned content? Gary

Hi Roseanne, On the human side of teaching you use the same techniques as you have in your medical practice. Respect and rapport are critical for teaching success. On the delivery side, break the content down into small segments so the students can build on the sequence of content and see how far they have progressed during the course. Help them to "connect the dots" between what is being taught in the classroom/lab and the real world and you will have done a great job of instructing. Observe other instructors use the BASE model. Hi Brenda, You are right on with your planning and approach. I believe you are going to be able to really target the learning needs of your students with the planning and organization that you are developing. Gary
Hi Monica, I to teach long session classes once a week. I follow this same format so I can keep the students engaged and focused throughout the entire evening. Which at times can be a real challenge. Gary
Hi Monica, This is very true. Plus, by sharing this information you are developing rapport with the students which is critical in the overall instructional picture. Gary
Hi Barry, I think you have done a great job of understanding how networking and reaching out to others can be of benefit to you. People do like to share and as result of sharing a connection is made that can long term and of benefit to all parties. Gary
Hi Monica, This is a good way to create a comfort level for your students. They learn about the expectations of the course while getting to know the instructor and other students better. Gary
Hi Stacy, Good approach in incorporating everyone into the learning structure. This way each student can find their comfort level within the class and maximize the learning opportunities that exist. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Richard, Good point on how to retain focus while making sure you cover the essential content. Gary
Hi Bradford, Is there another way to get the content delivered. Is it possible to use guided notes or structured outlines so the students will be able to pick up the essential points? This way you may have some time to have discussion within the lecture time. Gary
