I have had students do discussion boards and they have to respectively reply to other students.  They have had some great conversations going and actually learned how to look at others points of view even though they are not face to face.

It is important to help students make a good time line and learn how to prioritize.  Let them know we are all in the same boat and be there to help guide them through the processes.
