I fully agree because I text, email and call. However some students do not respond no matter how you reach out to them. Now I know they will avoid calls or send me directly to email when they are avoiding me. But still I try to communicate every 2-3 days. I want my students to pass but I cannot help them if they don't respond. Further, unlike a traditional course they cannot resubmit assignments if it is way passed the deadline. I already use a lot of the tips that were provided.

I find that some students  shut down because General Ed courses are not fun or valued like their major courses. In their other courses they may not be required to write many essays or conduct research but in English these factors are necessary to be successful in the course.

For instance, in other courses since they don't use Turn it In so they don't like to use for my English course. So I try to be encouraging by consistently offering assistance and web links that will assist them with… >>>

I agree, I send emails to each individual student and ask them to use one word to describe themselves. This is an interesting way to learn about each of them as individuals.
