About me

Activity

I teach in the classroom, not online and I also find that most of my students are very dependant and want exact instructions of what is expected from them. I am very interested to hear that online students are more self directed, independant learners. I have always felt that the personal connection of the onground classroom was more conducive to learning but I am now having second thoughts with regard to that opinion. If you only teach online and are refering to students who are new to online courses then perhaps it is their unfamiliarity with navigating the virtual classroom.

This course in Adaptive Learning in Higher Education was very interesting. It clarified many misconceptions I had about the subject. I now feel that it could work very well in some types of courses. I teach Fashion Design, in particular the physical development of patterns and garments as well as the design, fabric choices and artistic aesthetics of the product. While many aspects of the fashion industry are now computerized I still find it difficult to see how this could be taught with the adaptive learning method. However, mind is open to all possibilities as technology burgeons into the future.

I also found this course very interesting. Although I already use some techniques to encourage collaborative learning in my classes the course gave me some more ideas I could implement. My classes involve practicing individual skills and it is difficult to create group activities but I encourage students to give each other feedback on each other's work or to give each other suggestions on ways to accomplish a task.

I am in the fashion industry and by definition fashion has always been about change. Technology has now taken over what was originally a hands on profession and the changes are constant not only in the product itself but the way they are produced. Instructors have to keep on top of these changes and encourage their students to do the same.

Discussion Comment

I do adjust my lesson plan for each class depending on what we accomplished in the previous class so that I can tailor the sequence to the particular group of students.
