Reach out to local community leaders and businesses to create intern opportunities and discuss relevant instruction to "real world" experiences. This helps to ensure we are on target with content and current with technology in the classroom.

In my experience, the best way to motivate CTE students is with hands-on activities.

I teach at a DAEP, where many students have high needs.

  1. Creating SEL lessons based on students needs.
  2. Fostering relationships with students, and families.
  3. Being an example of someone who is able to express emotions in a productive manner.

SEL is a process by which students learn to express, and to deal with their emotions.

Our school is a charter school. We network within our community for partnership opportunities. This past year, we had an advisory committee to gain insight from our community partners and to be an asset and a resource for them in the community. They, in turn, shared valuable insight to help us equip our students with the skills needed to be prepared to enter a career targeted for future growth and providing a sustainable income.

Our school district strives to partner with businesses in the community to give our students the most authentic experience in our CTE classes. We have tried to keep up with changing industry standards with technology as best as possible.

Time Constraints – With a packed curriculum focused on career pathways and required standards, it can be difficult to find time for dedicated SEL activities or discussions.

  1. Group Projects in Class – Working in teams helps students learn to cooperate, manage conflict, and show empathy toward others’ ideas and perspectives.
  2. Career and Technical Education (CTE) Classes – Many CTE classes include teamwork, communication, and professional behavior, which are key SEL skills.
  3. Extracurricular Activities and Sports – Teams and clubs teach students how to work together, manage emotions under pressure, and develop leadership and cooperation.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is how people learn to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, show empathy, make good choices, and work toward personal and group goals.  SEL is how students and adults learn to understand and manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, show care for others, set goals, and make good, responsible decisions.
