All Students Matter!

As instructors, we must treat every student the same.  Once a student realizes, he or she is being treated differently, the instructor will be labeled as having favorites.  Students frown upon favoritism. Remember, every student is important and should be treated as such.  No one student is any more important than the other.

Some students ask for special consideration because they have to take care of their Mother and could not get the work done, etc  It must be emphasized that all students have to be treated equally, although at times an instructor would like to give an exceptional some special consideration.

Absolutely, many students feel they should be treated differently during class.  I tend to be sure that all students are teaching me as well as me teaching them.  Then the class is not only for them but for the instructor as well.  We are all learning through the process of the course and not one instructor can know everything including a 23 year instructor.  Challenging the instructor is something all students should do,  for the instructor to allow the challenge opens them to be a well rounded person.

It all comes back to the olden Rule" Treat people how you want to be treated" and you cant go far wrong. Think back to your classroom experiences and remember the teachers who engaged and made you feel special. How did they do that? Smile, gesture, positive comment, feedback on papaers, questions about your well-being etc. All show at some level that a teacher cared and made you feel special. There is not another feeling like that!
