complacent vs. compliant

After years of teaching one can get comfortable in their style and somewhat complacent in planning/delivering course.  Good course to remind one to comply with the suggestions for being the best instructor impossible.

I need to be a stronger presence.  I'm too much of a buddy.

Matthew,

I have a question for you: what do you teach and are you apparelled as a buddy or the instructor. Our presence is often dictated by our appearance. Additionally, are you mild mannered, or assertive. Taking a few courses in assertive communication might help.

I have found that it is alright to be friendly but you can not become a friend to students . Drawing a line  may be a challenge, but rememebering as you befriend a student they learn your character and sometimes this will work against you. Being matter of fact and "by the book" initally helps to establish boundaries, remembering to keep an open door policy regarding student concerns and addressing the concerns in a clear and professional manner. As time goes on you will find a niche in style of befreinding students.
