Connecting with the Student

Building a rapport with the student can be complicated with the various student personalities. However, I think the best advice is to listen to the student and try your best to understand their issues. Not only understand their issues but offer some sort of solution.

I agree, being able to relate to students is important.

I enjoy helping others and students usually have issues that can really cause them to loose focus if the problem is not addressed. So offering what ever you'd be willng to do might go a long way.

I find that if I relate an issue in class that has to do with real world application, the student is engaged in what I have to say versus telling them to just do it a certain way

Being ethical is by far the most important thing of all. Your students will pick up on it if you are not. Remember actions speak louder than words.
