Developing Rapport with Students

Creating a connection with students is a goal that all instructors need to have. If instructors can connect with students in way that shows the students that the instructor cares about them as individuals then they become more engaged in the learning process. Some instructors are concerned that if they become too friendly in their approach they will cross the line between being an instructor and a pal of the student. While this is a very valid concern it shouldn't be on obstacle to developing rapport with students. Rapport is based upon mutual respect for each other. When students have an instructor that they respect and know is working hard to share with them information and content that will help them to achieve their career goals then motivation is higher and learning is enhanced.

Spend time getting to know your students as you start a new class. Use ice breakers in the first class meeting so the students can get to know each other, share background information and get settled into the class. Greet the students as they come into the class each day, ask them about their weekend, refer to a community event, or any other connection you might have with each student. It doesn't take long for them to see that you care about them, their lives and their success. This is when rapport development really starts to occur.

Encouraging students to get truly involved in their academic studies as well as their technical studies is challenging for the instructor in the best of times.  Many students do not see the importance of developing their soft skills.  It requires a dedicated, passionate, well informed academic instructor to break through barriers in order to educate student on an academic level.
