Seeing the Future

Students select a career area and then enroll in a career college to receive the education they need to enter their chosen field.  They base their selection on a variety of factors, such as personal interest, family support, employment opportunities, economic need and actual experience in that field.  What ever the reason they have made progress in their career development as evidenced by their enrollment in a preparation program.  The challenge comes when they start to lose sight of why they enrolled in the program in the first place.  This is not uncommon so periodically throughout their educational careers they need encouragement and support so they will keep the vision that they had when they first enrolled.

Students need help in understanding the value of taking academic and/or foundational courses.  They may forget that business, communication and social development courses can help them with the development of their "soft skills" which are essential for career success.  Work to draw direct connections between course content and career applications so they will see how each course in their training sequence contributes to career growth.  Students can become disillusioned even when they are in their specific career areas so the more you can give them practical application opportunities plus exposure to individuals from the field the more motivated they will be.  It is a matter of going back to the original reason why they enrolled and helping them to see that reason even after a year or two of being in the program.

Humans have a short attention span in a lot of areas such as continuing with  dieting or exercise program.  96% of the people who start a diet or exercise program will have quit within in six weeks unless they are reminded on a regular basis of why they are doing what they are doing.   So just as individuals need to be reminded of why they started their diet and/or exercise programs in the first place students need to be reminded of what the goal was they had when they entered college and how that goal is still the same and that they are making progress in achieving it.  This will help them with their vision quest as well as career attainment.
