Being a Role Model for Students

Many career college students have selected area of study to prepare to enter a career that they don't totally understand or identify with. They are still in the process of learning about what their career area entails in relation to preparation, dedication and effort. To help them with this learning process you need to model what a professional in their career area is really like. So you are fulfilling two roles as an instructor. One, you are coordinating and directing their learning as a teacher of content and skills. Two, you are showing your students how a professional in the field should look and act. This ranges from dress to interaction with other workers. As you approach the classroom/lab each class session reflect on this responsibility and make sure that your students see in you a model of someone in their career area from which they can learn. By doing this you will be fulfilling not only your responsibility as an educator but also creating a legacy of highly qualified individuals for your field. Enjoy this role.

Students become better connected with the profession as the experience becomes more real. By dressing appropriate to the profession, the environmental fidelity of the experience has increased.
