Learn About the Student Services Your College Offers

As an instructor it is a good idea to know what services are available to your students.  By knowing what these services are and how they support students you will be able to more accurately focus on referring students when a need arises.

Start with the admissions department.  How does admissions personnel work with potential students?  What do they tell them about the programs,  curriculum, instructors and support services?  By knowing this information you will know what the students know in relation to their entering the course either onsite or online.  This way you can target your conversations with the students in a way that reinforces what they have already been told.

Get to know the personnel in Career Services.  They will be working with your students during their job seeking.  By knowing how Career Services puts together the job search package you will be able to help students in the development of their resumes and career portfolios.  In addition, you will learn how Career Services walks the students through the job seeking steps so you can have class discussions around these steps as the students progress through your course.

Explore the different types of support services that are available to the studentd while they are enrolled.  These services may include financial aid, transportation assistance, and/or personal counseling.  By knowing about all of these service you will be able to make more targeted referrals thus helping the students to get support and answers more quickly.

If there is an alumin association or extra curricular special interest clubs on campus learn about these as well.  You can mention them in your class which lets the students know they have a variety of options available to them that can meet a special interest they have.

All of the above services and activity options will be listed in the student handbook and mentioned by different college personnel during student orientation but the information is often not retained by students since so much is coming at them at one time.  By sharing information about all of the above mentioned areas in a casusal way throughout the course they will be able to retain what they are hearing and make use of it at a much higher level.  This is because they are settled into the college and their courses and have developed an understanding of how they fit within the college structure.  So you be informed so you can inform and your students will benefit as a result.
