Setting the Stage for Student Motivation

It has been said that no one can motivate you to do anything, you have to do it yourself. While this global statement is true in the broadest sense, an instructor can certainly create opportunities for students to motivate themselves as they move through their courses.

Humans need encouragement on a daily basis. We seek encouragement from a number of different sources (family, friends, peers, etc.). If we don’t get this encouragement we start to slow down in our progress towards whatever goal we are striving for. For example, think how many weight loss and exercise programs are out there that require some form of accountability on a weekly basis.  The ecouragement and support given at these weekly meetings plus talking with other successful participants helps greatly with personal motivation.

As an instructor you play a pivotal role in the encouragement and motivation process.  Greet each student on a daily basis and give them encouragement and support. For some students this will involve a brief greeting and inquiry about how they are doing for other students you may have to spend some additional time listening and learning about their progress in the course.  Either way you are letting them know you care about them and their success.  This really helps with there personal motivation.
