Student Centered Learning, 21st Century Learning, and a lesson learned from Boy Scouts

For the last decade (plus) my professional and personal development has intersected.  Professionally, I have grown from a campus leader to providing services to multiple campuses.  Personally/Professionally, I went back to school to earn a doctorate in instructional leadership.  Personally, I went beyond my comfort zone and served as a Scoutmaster for my sons' Boy Scout troop.  When it comes to Student Centered Learning and 21st Century Learning this last decade has provided me significant opportunities to learn about how we educators need to embrace the role of "Guide on the Side" for students and integrate current technology into instruction.  Yet, It may be the principle behind the 102 year old scouting program that resonates the most.  Scouting is built upon the principle of being a "Boy" led organization.  Adults are the "Guide on the Side", learning happens in a variety of environments and in a variety of methods.  However, it is the learner, the scout, that is at the center of all the learning activity.  AND it is the fellow scout that is also the teacher.  As I continue to evolve and develope my professional skills I reflect upon the experience I gained from a role I took on for family.

 

 

Yes! "Guiding on the side" or as you refer to "mentoring" is an important component to online teaching. We need to move away from thinking of material as a lecture that we are providing students. In addition, today's students come exposed to so many things that I find it makes each course I teach different and interesting--that has to br brought out more. It helps us teach students by building on what they already know to achieve course requirements.

Well thank you for being a Scoutmaster. There are so many children that learn so much from you.

I am a huge fan of student centered learning. It is said that students retain 90% of the information, when they direct their learning. I often use activities in my classroom, where the students go through the information, and outline what they believe to be important. I am there to solely guide them through the process.
