This module taught me that retention is more than just keeping students enrolled — it’s about helping them feel supported, motivated, and connected throughout their educational journey. I learned that communication, encouragement, and early intervention can make a huge difference in whether a student succeeds or gives up. Sometimes students are carrying silent battles outside the classroom, and one caring conversation can completely shift their mindset. That part hit hard because education is never just about grades; it’s about people.

I also learned the importance of building trust and creating a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. Consistency, accountability, and showing genuine care all play a role in retention. Old-school wisdom still stands true here: people remember how you made them feel long before they remember a lecture slide.

I intend to apply what I learned by being more proactive with students who seem disengaged or overwhelmed. I want to continue checking in, offering support, and creating an environment where students feel seen and valued. As an educator in dental assisting, I know confidence can make or break a student’s progress. My goal is to encourage students not only to complete the program, but to believe they are capable of building a successful future in healthcare. Sometimes the smallest support becomes the reason someone keeps going. : )
